Smart Home Automation Project with Custom Flutter App

Technology has transformed the way we live, and home automation is one of the best examples of how innovation can make our lives more convenient, efficient, and secure. A group of 7th semester studentsMr. Kismat Duwadi, Rajwasee Poudel, Simran Panthi, Nikita Lamichhane, and Priyashi Jasiwal—recently developed a Home Automation Project that integrates both hardware and software, allowing users to control home appliances remotely with just a smartphone.

What makes this project unique is that the team built a custom app using Flutter, ensuring a user-friendly interface and seamless functionality tailored to their design.

🔹 Project Overview

The project is designed to give users complete control over household appliances such as lights, fans, and other electrical devices. Through the mobile app, users can:

  • Turn appliances on/off instantly.

  • Schedule appliances with a timer function.

  • Operate appliances remotely over WiFi, making it possible to manage a home from anywhere.

This system not only adds comfort but also helps in energy-saving by ensuring devices are used only when required.

🔹 Key Features

  1. Custom Flutter Mobile App

    • A clean and responsive app designed specifically for this system.

    • Supports real-time control of devices.

  2. WiFi Integrated System

    • Connects with home appliances via the ESP32 NodeMCU module.

    • Works seamlessly as long as the user and device are connected to the internet.

  3. Timer & Scheduling

    • Users can schedule appliances to turn on or off at specific times.

    • Perfect for lights, fans, or any device that needs automation.

  4. Scalable & Flexible Design

    • The system can be expanded to include more appliances.

    • Suitable for smart homes of any size.

🔹 Components Used

  • ESP32 NodeMCU – The microcontroller at the heart of the project, handling WiFi connectivity and system logic.

  • Relay Module – Acts as a switch to control electrical appliances safely.

  • Bulb Lights – Used as demo appliances for testing and showcasing functionality.

  • Custom Mobile App (Flutter) – Developed from scratch to interact with the ESP32 and provide real-time controls.

🔹 Working Principle

The ESP32 NodeMCU connects to the WiFi network and communicates with the mobile app. When a user sends a command (like turning on a light) through the Flutter app, the ESP32 processes it and activates the relay module connected to the appliance.

The timer function allows users to set schedules, which are stored and executed by the system automatically. This ensures hassle-free operation without manual intervention every time.

🔹 Benefits of the Project

  • Remote Access: Control appliances from anywhere in the world.

  • Convenience: Manage multiple devices with a single tap.

  • Energy Efficiency: Automate devices to save electricity.

  • Scalability: Can be expanded with sensors (motion, temperature, etc.) for more intelligent automation.

🔹 Conclusion

This Home Automation Project is a practical step toward creating a smart home environment. With the integration of custom software (Flutter app) and reliable hardware (ESP32 NodeMCU, Relay modules), it offers flexibility, comfort, and efficiency to users.
